Connecting Leopards, Connecting People: The Central Asian Ecological Connectivity Initiative

The Center is increasingly engaging with partners across Central Asia to build capacity, promote research, and implement connectivity conservation efforts in the countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. We are proud to be part of growing collaboration across this globally important biodiversity hotspot that has, among other progress, yielded important scientific evidence about the presence of an endangered and charismatic species—the Persian leopard—in Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.

Partnership Spotlight: Wildlife Connect

Wildlife Connect is an exciting new initiative of WWF International, and the Center for Large Landscape Conservation is advising on its development. The partnership aims to create ecologically connected and thus climate-resilient landscapes throughout WWF’s conservation work with a focus on three important and vulnerable landscapes on three continents.

Join Us at the First-Ever IUCN Global Youth Summit

The virtual IUCN “One Nature, One Future” Global Youth Summit takes place April 5-16, 2021, and the Center for Large Landscape Conservation will host two sessions for young conservationists. The Summit is designed to strengthen connections between young leaders globally and add momentum to growing youth movements for nature and climate. Since the two-week event will be entirely virtual, and entirely free, there’s no reason not to register!

5 Ways Corridors Help Wildlife Survive and Thrive

The earth is made up of many large landscapes and seascapes that support animal life. But parks and other protected areas alone are not enough to sustain healthy wildlife populations in the face of a changing climate and increasing human development. Fragmented habitat isolates and weakens animal populations and puts them at greater risk of extinction. It is more essential now than ever that we preserve or restore corridors—or connections between natural areas—before it’s too late.

Launch of French Translation of IUCN Global Guidelines for Connectivity Conservation

Following release of the first-ever IUCN ‘Guidelines for Conserving Connectivity through Ecological Networks and Corridors’ in July 2020, the Center for Large Landscape Conservation today announces publication of the official French translation of this groundbreaking document. The Center’s global leadership contributed to the creation of the guidelines, a milestone achievement for the protection of the Earth’s ecological connectivity—the unimpeded movement of species and the flow of natural processes that sustain life.

Contributions to the Virtual IENE International Conference “LIFE LINES”

The Infrastructure and Ecology Network Europe (IENE) recently held its postponed International Conference LIFE LINES – Linear Infrastructure Networks with Ecological Solutions, bringing together experts in transportation, infrastructure, and ecology, including staff from the Center. The event focused on advancing initiatives that increase awareness, collaboration, and action for more sustainable linear infrastructure—such as roads, railways, and canals—that safeguards nature.

NACCB 2020 Policy Declaration: A Call to Action for Connectivity

The North American Congress for Conservation Biology (NACCB) has released its official policy declaration titled Advance Ecological Connectivity Implementation in the Rocky Mountains and North America. CLLC is proud to have supported the drafting of this innovative call to action and now looks forward to promoting its implementation.

CLLC Releases 2020 Annual Report

We are pleased to announce the publication of our 2020 Annual Report, in which we share some of our exciting work that took place over the past year. While it was a year full of challenges for all of us, we forged ahead with our efforts to reverse fragmentation, restore nature’s resilience to climate change, and support community-led action. Contributions to “Infrastructure and Nature Webinar Series”

On 19 November, the Center collaborated with the IUCN WCPA Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group and other important partners to lead a 90-minute session titled “Balancing Ecological Connectivity and Linear Infrastructure” as the fifth installment of the Infrastructure and Nature Webinar Series.

Carpathian Bioregion: First Ground Testing of IUCN Connectivity Guidelines

The report from the Connectivity Conservation Workshop: Guiding the Carpathian Region has now been released. It details the outcomes of discussions among over 50 scientists, conservation experts, natural resource managers, and policymakers from 13 countries that met in Poiana Brasov, Romania from 4-6 November 2019.
