Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative Celebrates ‘Interdependence Day’ with Art on the Beach

The Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative and its partners Lincoln City and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians celebrated July 4, 2023 with a giant, 100-yard-long “Interdependence Day” themed sand graphic along the shores of the Cascade Head Biosphere Region and Marine Reserve to connect biosphere region residents and visitors with the sea and how it sustains life.

Twenty-five volunteer rakers helped create the graphic depicting a giant pacific octopus holding four glass floats in its arms with messages about our connection with the sea scribed on the sands in front of the Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon.

In addition to the more than 1,000 people who attended the event in person, the Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative used a drone to offer a live, bird’s-eye-view of the octopus on their social media platforms and website. Check out the video here.

Img 8557Art on the Beach 2023 continues with a community competition on Saturday, August 5 at Roads End State Recreation Area. The theme of the competition is Cascade Head Biosphere Region-inspired art. The community competition welcomes four-person teams to participate and celebrate the Cascade Head Biosphere Region through sand art.

Teams will work next to featured artist and co-director of the Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative, Duncan Berry, and his team of volunteer rakers who are creating a giant piece of sand art spelling out BIOSPHERE and bringing the life-sustaining ocean condition of UPWELLING to light through a creative sand art design.
